Strong field to contest today’s Medal Play handicap tourney

European Union (EU)  ambassador  to Guyana, Geert Heikens,  is expected to be among a large field of golfers billed to compete in today’s European Union sponsored Medal Play handicap golf tournament at the Lusignan  course on the East Coast of Demerara.

Heikens, head of the EU delegation in Guyana and his wife Rita are ardent golf players and will be among the starters.

Jerome Khan, club captain of the Lusignan Golf Club disclosed that over 40 golfers will be in action in the one-day event which starts at noon.

Last year’s winner teenager Avinda  “Ganguly” Kishore is expected to defend his title but will be hard pressed to retain same by a strong  line up that will include  Ian Gouveia, Patrick Prashad, Esau Shamshudin, Lester Alvis, Chatterpaul Deo, Imran Khan, Mike Mangal, Lester Alvis, Joann Deo,  Melissa Humphrey, Brian Gladford,  Ronald Bulkan, Jerome Khan, Maurice Solomon, Brian Hackett, Munaff Arjune, Christine Sukhram, Robert Hanoman, Mike Guyadin, Bruce Cummings, Andre Cummings, William Walker, Imran Khan, Mel Sankies   Bolaram Deo, Dr. Ram Singh, Clifford Reis, Mark Lashley, Alfred  Mentore and Albert Semple.
The players will also use this tournament as a warm up for the Guyana Open two-day championships slated for later this month at Lusignan.

The presentation of prizes will take place at the Ambassador’s residence at University Garden and members of the club, players and their spouses have been invited to attend.

Meanwhile, Kishore warmed up for today’s tournament with a victory in Group ‘B’ of last weekend’s Caddies tournament sponsored by the  EU which attracted 36 caddies. Group ‘A’ was won by caddie Daso.
