‘Cheesy’ Singh completes century

…GCC disposes of TSC by innings and 21 runs, three matches drawn

Vishal “Cheesy” Singh’s ton spearheaded Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) to an innings and 21-run victory over Transport Sports Club (TSC) in less than two sessions after rain washed out the morning session of the third round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) three-day first division tournament yesterday.

Singh continued his exploits from the second day to be left unbeaten on 127, which consisted of 14 boundaries, after GCC declared at 297-3; the home side resumed the day on 212-2 and a lead of 44. Leon Johnson, who was left not out on 15 failed to add to his overnight score; Treon Forde contributed an undefeated 35.

Singh featured in a 175-run second wicket partnership with GCC’s other centurion Wasim Haslim (112) before they routed the suspect batting line up of TSC for 108 in less than a session. TSC’s highest scorer was, once again Kevin Alphonso with 23 while Stephon Alves made 19 and Devaughn Nandan, a defiant undefeated 18.

Johnson’s off-spin accounted for four of TSC’s wickets for a miserly 14; Ricardo Jadanauth and Gavin Singh each took two wickets for 24 runs.

On the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) after the entire second day was lost to rain, Police fast bowler and currently encamped in the national squad, Trevor Benn rescued his side from 233-7 to record 61 in their encounter against Lusignan in the drawn encounter. Benn resumed yesterday on 25 with Pernel London who only added four runs to his overnight score to end on 27.

Benn, who stroked four boundaries and three sixes,  featured in another partnership with Vishal Jaigobin who knocked three boundaries in his 29. Spinner Azam Haniff captured 5-73 from his 28 overs while he was aided by Kumar Bishunedyal who had figures of 2-38 from his 11 overs.

By close of play Lusignan had already mounted a strong reply to reach 210-3 with Krishan Deosarran making an unbeaten 57 (5×4, 2×6) and Harrinarine Hira making 52, which saw the ball reaching the boundary five times and twice clearing the ropes; Vishnu Ramjeet (38), Somnauth Bharrat (34) and Surujpaul Deosarran (21*) all chipped in with good scores for their team.

Jaigobin and Benn were the most economical bowlers with 1-36 (6) and 1-40 (11) respectively while Dexter Southwell had 1-59 from six overs.

Home team Everest Cricket Club (ECC) replied with 220-7 as that match ended in a draw against Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC). Darshan Roopnarine (60) Avinash Deokie (50) Chanderpaul Hemraj (42) and Rakesh Goberdan (33) made up the bulk of the scoring in response to GNIC’s 355-7 declared.

Ryan Miller took 3-56 and Rayon Griffith returned figures of 2-40 for GNIC. When GNIC batted Krishna Arjune made an invaluable 182.

At the Malteenoes Sports Club ground rain had the final say. MSC (114-4) was in pursuit of Demerara Cricket Club’s first innings score of 280 with Orin Forde crafting a valuable half century. Derwin Christian (55), Christopher Barnwell (41) and Jamal Hinckson were the top scorers for DCC.
