Nothing to Laugh About on at the cultural centre

Maria Benschop’s Nothing to Laugh About, which is a collection of satirical sketches, is set for a repeat tonight at the National Cultural Centre after opening to good reviews at the Theatre Guild in November last year.

The sketches take a satirical swipe at everything from drug accused Roger Khan to Carifesta, and on its debut Benschop pitched it as fresh social commentary that had been long overdue. She offers up a string of parodies, which in her own words, “evokes laughter in retrospect”.

Maria is a first-time writer, but she recruited experienced stage veteran Henry Rodney to wear the director’s hat. According to her, the show is as serious as it is funny, and she explains that it brings to the fore issues that are of critical importance to the country. But she noted that the time has long passed for people to lament on the various issues, and that it is perhaps time to have a laugh.

Tickets for the show range between $500 and $1,000.
