False report of hijack lands employees in custody

Two employees of a timber concession are now in custody after falsely reporting the theft of a lorry belong to the company, police say.

A release from police said that about 8.30 pm on Wednesday they received a report from the manager of a concession along the UNAMCO road.

According to the manager two of his employees had informed the company that they had been held up by three men armed with firearms at Bamboo Landing, Upper Berbice River, who took away a motor lorry belonging to the company which they were using at the time.

According to the police release, the Guyana Police Force dispatched a team of police ranks to the area to investigate.

The lorry was subsequently recovered along the UNAMCO trail about four miles from the timber concession with damage to the body of the vehicle.

Further investigations revealed that the two employees had taken the motor lorry without permission for their personal use and had damaged the vehicle in the process.

They subsequently issued a false report to cover their actions, the police said.

The two employees will be charged accordingly.
