Woman corporal of the Guyana Defence Force, Kesia Sharpe is thankful that she and a relative were able to miraculously escape without injury. “All I could say is that God was with me”, she added.

Sharpe recalled that around 2:30 am she felt as though she was falling down and thought she was in a dream. Seconds later she was awakened by a crashing sound and saw the nearby wardrobe sliding towards her bed.

The woman told Stabroek News that realising that she had no other way out, she jumped through a bedroom window to safety. A male relative was able to reach safety before her through the back door.

She said that the collapse of the structure was baffling as there was no heavy rainfall or strong breeze prior to the incident. Sharpe said that there was never any indication that the house was unstable and she recalled that recently it had withstood heavy rain.

This newspaper was told that the house is family property but Sharpe who was residing there with her fiancé and his cousin, had many appliances that were crushed under the weight of the fallen structure.

“Right now I am scared and I am confused because I don’t know where to start now. Everything get damage and I have to start all over again”, she added.

When Stabroek News arrived at the address just after 11 am, the collapsed structure was still in the same position and it appeared at though little had been salvaged from the interior.

The occupants are currently staying with relatives living in the area.

Later, Sharpe said that a group of men were dismantling the structure to facilitate rebuilding efforts. She said though that presently she is unable to acquire the finances to do so and appealed to the public for help.

She said that even if the help is in the form of building materials she will be grateful as she already has carpenters who are willing to help her rebuild.
