Warrant issued for former judge Jainarayan Singh

-charged with traffic offences

Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani has issued an arrest warrant for former High Court judge Justice Jainarayan Singh Jr over traffic offences.

The warrant was issued at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court on Friday after the former judge was charged on four separate counts of traffic-related offences. Court documents show that Justice Singh was charged with failing to submit to a breathalyzer test; being an unlicensed driver; breach of insurance and driving an uncertified motor vehicle.

Reports are that on August 10, Justice Singh was involved in an accident at Enmore, East Coast Demerara around 10 pm. He is said to have struck a parked cycle that was on the Enmore access road resulting in the cycle being damaged. The accident was reported to the police and the former judge was asked to report to the station.

It was reported that Justice Singh showed up at the Cove and John station with another relative and was subsequently sent away.

Reports also indicate that either Singh or the relative told the police that the former judge was asthmatic and could not be subjected to a breathalyzer test. Justice Jainarayan Singh retired from the bench in 2008 and is currently in private practice; he had said that delayed benefits from the state forced him out of retirement.

The case against him is to be called again later this month.
