Second round of Topco Juices tournament for today

The DDL Topco Juices annual mid-year chess tournament is underway and the second round will be played this morning from 10am at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club. Eyes will be focused on the six players who have qualified for participation in the upcoming FIDE tournament.

The six players who will represent Guyana in the tournament are Taffin Khan, Ronuel Greenidge, Shiv Nandalall, Loris Nathoo, David Khan and Ryan Singh. These players will compete against four foreign chess players in a round robin tournament to be held in Guyana next month. The primary purpose of this tournament, which will be conducted by the World Chess Federation, is to give our players an opportunity to secure international chess ratings based on their individual performances. FIDE is despatching an International Arbiter to conduct  the tournament.

Taffin Khan, Greenidge, Nandalall and Nathoo played well in the last tournament, along with the two other qualifiers. David Khan is a seasoned campaigner of the game and is expected to give a fair account of himself in this DDL tournament. Ryan Singh was the surprise qualifier. In the previous Kei-Shar’s tournament, he played carefully to impress those who viewed his games.

It is the first time that Guyana will be hosting such a tournament to give our players international ratings. The tournament is expected to be graced by the presence of the Regional Director for Chess in the Caribbean Mr Allan Herbert, and the Continental President for FIDE, Mr Jorge Vega from Mexico.

The FIDE- accredited time control will be used in this preparatory Topco Juices Tournament.

This format will allow players to have more time on their clocks as they contemplate their moves. Players therefore, would go deeper into their analyses, and we should have games of a higher calibre.
