National Junior Chess Championship gets under way

The National Junior Chess Championship began over the weekend for eight qualifiers. Seven juniors played the qualifying tournament and got into the championship. The national champion Cecil Cox qualified automatically. The tournament is a round robin one with a time limit of one-and-a-half hours per game.

The seniors will play their qualifying tournament from next weekend. A total of nine games per player will be contested. All the top chess players of Guyana are expected to play in the tournament.

The time limit for that tournament will also be ninety minutes plus increments. The schedule for the games in the seniors national qualifying tournament is as follows:

Sun Oct 17……2 rounds beginning from 9am.
Sat Oct 23……1 round from 5pm.
Sun Oct 24…..2 rounds beginning from 10am.
Wed Oct 27…1 round
Sat   Oct 30…..1 round
Sun    Oct 31…..2 rounds beginning from 10am

The qualifiers from this tournament will play in the national championship.

In international news, the Ukraine defeated Russia to emerge victorious in this year’s Chess Olympiad in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia.
Vassily Ivanchuk of the Ukraine had a successful tournament. The world’s number one player Magnus Carlsen lost twice in the tournament, to Georgia’s Baadur Jobova and England’s Michael Adams. Over 140 countries participated in the Olympiad.
