Police up to press time had not arrested anyone in connection with the man’s murder. However, this newspaper was reliably informed that police had received some “valuable information” about the car which transported Hoyte’s murderer and are currently conducting an extensive search.
In a press statement last evening Police Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker reported that they are “investigating the death of Nicholas Hoyte, 29 years, which occurred at about 2030 h” Tuesday at Light and Sixth streets, Alberttown.
Investigations, police said, revealed that Hoyte was sitting in his car when another car drove up alongside. A number of shots were discharged at Hoyte from the vehicle and struck him about the body. The car then sped away.
Hoyte was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Nancy Herod told this newspaper yesterday that a post-mortem examination has not yet been conducted on her brother’s body. The woman said she doesn’t understand why anyone would have wanted Hoyte dead.
Reports from several persons in the area at the time of Hoyte’s murder, said he had parked his car at Sixth and Light streets, Alberttown and was sitting inside. Around 8.45 pm a white car, one man had said, “came cruising by” and one of its passengers leaned over into Hoyte’s car and discharged a number of shots at him.
The incident occurred in a short time and Hoyte reportedly sustained seven gunshot wounds about the body.
Hoyte, originally of Fifth Street, Alberttown, was living with the mother of his child at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara before his death.
His murder comes amid a spate of gun crimes. Last Friday, another man, Vibert Weekes, was gunned down on Robb Street. He was reportedly shot 14 times. So far there has been nothing to suggest that the two murders are related.
Since January 1, according to statistics compiled by Stabroek News, there have been four gun related murders all of which occurred at various city locations. Police are yet to charge anyone with these crimes.
Bascal Johnson, 44, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown died on the morning of January 4; one night after he was shot to the head by an unknown gunman.
Last Friday, during a five-minute rampage at Safraz’s Bar and Restaurant on David Street, Kitty gunmen shot waitress Kulmattie Singh, 35, of North/East Cummings Lodge in the head.
The same night, just before midnight, Weekes was murdered on Robb Street.
