Brazilian wanted for cop killing arrested for bike theft

A Brazilian man, arrested for allegedly stealing a bicycle, was remanded after a court was told he was wanted in connection with the murder of a policeman in his native country.

William Da Silva had pleaded not guilty to a simple larceny charge when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing another man’s bicycle.

It is alleged that on February 21, 2010 at Shulinab, Central Rupununi, he stole a bicycle valued $55,000, belonging to Callius Lewis.

However, prosecutor Stephen Telford asked that bail be refused for Da Silva, on the grounds that he is wanted in connection with the murder of a policeman in Brazil.

The magistrate subsequently refused bail for Da Silva and ordered that the matter be transferred to the Lethem Magistrates’ Court for March 9.
