Three new airport food outlets open

The opening represented the latest initiative by businessman Naeem Nasir, CEO of Bakewell and features a partnership between Rituals Coffee and Nestle.

Jagdeo said Nasir was an example of the tremendous burst of energy in investment in Guyana being driven by Guyanese nationals and re-migrants.  He said this was particularly notable since it was taking place at a time when the world is in a recession. He further emphasised the need to change the narrative the rest of the world gets about Guyana, since it does not reflect the actual situation. He added that much of the negativity comes from the image projected by the media and some people. He stressed the need to highlight success stories such as Nasir’s in order to inspire young entrepreneurs who will in turn grow, prosper and drive the country forward.

The opening was well attended by ministers of government, members of the diplomatic corps and the private sector.

Meanwhile Nasir said his investment was only possible against a background of stability created by the President and his government. The aim of his venture, he said, was to provide quality products as well as service which Guyanese deserve.

The business will be an added attraction for the airport and will provide a first and last impression of Guyana to all travellers.

Nilsa Andino, Export Development Manager, Nestle, Puerto Rico said Guyana is seen as one of the key growth markets in the Caribbean for the brand. She pointed out that the Nestle brand was recognized worldwide and would be able to cater to the nutritional needs of Guyanese.

Chairman/Franchisor of Rituals Coffee, Mario Sabga-Aboud said he had made a great choice in partnering with Nasir. He expressed confidence that they would be able to accomplish much together.

Sabga-Aboud added that he was proud to be in Guyana and shared his dreams of Rituals Coffee becoming the Starbucks of the Caribbean.

The two outlets at the airport mark the 73rd and 74th coffee houses of Rituals Coffee which is to be found in nine Caribbean countries.

Meanwhile, a cheque of $500,000 was presented to Dorothy Fraser of the Guyana Red Cross Society for its Convalescent Home. The donation, according to Nasir, is a customary giving-back which is done at the opening of any new business undertaken by Bakewell.

Fraser acknowledged the generous contribution which she said will help to cater to the needs of the children. She said security is one of the greatest needs of the home and welcomed the donation.

The outlets will offer 24-hour service which will cater to all passengers. They were scheduled to open for business at 2.30 am today. Passengers will be able to access Rituals Coffee in both the departure and arrival areas, while Roti Hut and the ice cream parlour are in the departure lobby.

Meanwhile, the President had indicated that he did not rule out the state getting back into the airplane industry in order to break the monopoly held by Caribbean Airlines. He said that there is a need for services to be appropriately priced so as to ensure that people get value for money.
