Guard remanded over wife beating that caused skull fracture

A 39-year-old man, who allegedly dealt his wife a severe beating that resulted in her sustaining a fractured skull among other injuries, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Quacie Williams

The security guard of Lot 187 West Ruimveldt was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of felonious wounding when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

The allegation is that on March 26 at his West Ruimveldt home, Quacie Williams unlawfully and maliciously wounded Trudy Williams with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause her bodily harm.

The accused, who stood uneasily in the dock, stated it was his wife’s actions that led him to his violent actions against her.

He explained that on the day in question his wife had abruptly left their matrimonial home at around 9:30 am  after receiving a phone call.

He stated that she spent the entire day away from the home and only returned at around 11:30 that night.

He noted that during the day he had tried to contact his wife’s sister, after being informed that she was there,  but the sister was asleep at the time.

He stated that he went out and returned home shortly after his wife and found her “changing she clothes cause she de dress up in jingles and bangles like she de partying.”

He stated that he confronted his wife about her leaving the home so abruptly and they ended up in an argument which resulted in a fight when he picked up a rolling pin and dealt her a series of blows to the head.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford then objected to Williams’ bail application, when he suggested it, on the grounds that this was not the first time that he had assaulted his wife.

He stated that last December the couple appeared in court for a matter of a similar nature and the accused had been placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years.

Telford noted that the accused broke the peace bond when this incident occurred.

Telford also stated that on the day of the incident Williams had armed himself with a rolling pin that he used to beat his wife to her head and face with the intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

He further stated that the woman is currently hospitalised.

The magistrate subsequently refused bail for the accused and ordered that he return to court on April 16 when  a report on his wife’s condition is expected.

Reports are that Trudy Williams, 29, suffered a fractured skull, a broken nose and abrasions about her body during the beating but according to her, her husband used a brick to inflict the injuries.
