Taxi driver snatched haversack with $700,000 in Bartica

– court told

Taxi driver Dominyk Williams from Melanie Damishana was granted $200,000 bail yesterday when he appeared in Court One on a charge of  larceny from the person allegedly committed in Bartica.

It is alleged that on Monday at Bartica he stole from the person of Nikisha Ready, one $2,000 haversack which contained $700,000, a total value of  $702,000, being the property of Narine Budhu.

Williams, 27, of 121 Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge.  “I know the guy who snatched the bag,” Williams told the court. He added that he saw when the man, known to him as “Tattle”, committed the act as he was then  passing.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford said that it was “Tattle” and the accused who committed the act.  He said that the VC was able to provide a description of the appearance and clothing of the two accused.  Telford added that it was the accused who had demanded the bag from Ready and when she refused to hand it over, he snatched it.  Ready then raised an alarm and Williams was caught with the bag and money.

The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for April 9.
