Cyclist killed in accident with vehicle

The police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred around midnight on Saturday on the Meten-Meer-Zorg Public Road, West Coast Demerara, which resulted in the death of 19-year-old pedal cyclist Ramesh Persaud, a resident of the area.

According to the police, investigations revealed that the driver of motor car PMM 3891 was proceeding along the public road when the vehicle collided with Persaud of Railway View, Meten-Meer-Zorg.
Persaud was towing 15-year-old Christopher Gittens, also of Railway View, and according to the police the two allegedly  rode out from a restaurant and into the path of the motor vehicle which collided with them.

The duo were taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where Persaud succumbed to his injuries while Gittens has been transferred to the GPHC.

Gittens was asleep when this newspaper visited him at the Public Hospital yesterday and according to his grandmother, the lad has still “not caught himself,” but was in a stable condition. She said she was told that her grandson and Persaud went out to the public road in the area to purchase “a Chinee” and were on their way home when they were hit by the car.

The driver of the motor car is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
