Festival to spotlight local rums, food

The inaugural Rum and Food Festival, aimed at the promotion of local rum and food, is scheduled to be held at the Promenade Gardens on May 1.

The festival is being hosted by the Global Friendship Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation aiming to promote friendship between people in various cities and countries.

According to Vice-Chairman of the Foundation Waynewright Orderson, the opportunity is being taken to promote local rum at food at a time when there will be tourists in the country for the ICC T20 World Cup cricket. The event offers all persons a chance to mingle and sample food from the various food tents.

The aim is to teach participants about the diversity of Guyanese food and the excellence of its rum.

The event will feature the country’s major rum producers, Demerara Distillers Limited and Banks DIH, displaying their rums and beverages as the highlight, accompanied by food booths offering varieties of foods by the best chefs and eating houses locally.

A small entrance fee of $200 for adults and $100 for children will be charged. The event starts at 10 am and the promoters say patrons will be entertained by local steel pan music and other cultural performances as they sample a wide selection of rums as well as great local food in the magical setting of the Promenade Gardens.
