The West Berbice businessman who was picked up at his home/business place on Friday for reportedly importing 274 rounds of ammunition has been placed on $100,000 station bail, his lawyer, Joel Persid Edmond said.
Yesterday, the bakery owner reported to the police at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Eve Leary and after further investigations was sent home and told to report again on Monday. He has continually protested his innocence, his lawyer said.
He had been arrested by the police at Blairmont and kept him there on Friday night. He was then taken to Eve Leary on Saturday and subsequently granted bail.
Reports are that the 12-gauge cartridges were discovered concealed among bread pans shipped from America in a container that was addressed to the baker.
Edmond told this newspaper that his client never ordered any ammunition and knew nothing about it. The lawyer said too that his client does not even have a gun and has no need for the ammo.
Besides, he claimed his client did not order bread pans but bread trays for shops to display his products to sell as well as dough breaker.
The orders were made to a supplier named, Doolie Chintamini “over the phone.” When the consignment arrived about one week ago, Edmond said the shipping agent informed his client.
On Friday after getting permission from the Customs Department, the brokers were in the process of opening it when the porters spotted one of the rounds.
He alerted the other workers and they immediately closed the container and informed ranks from the CID.
The lawyer is still baffled as to why the ammo was sent here and even wondered how it could have “left America without being detected.”
