Woman charged with smuggling cocaine on flight from Guyana

A woman was arrested at the John F Kennedy International Airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the US on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Guyana last Thursday.

Judge Joan Azrack placed Shoshanah Thompson on US$50,000 bail. According to the charge instituted against her, on April 29 she knowingly, intentionally and unlawfully imported cocaine into the US.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Spe-cial Agent, Daniel Reed, in an affidavit, stated that Thompson arrived at the JFK airport in a British West Indies Air (BWIA is now Caribbean Airlines) flight number 522 from George-town.

She was selected by Customs and Border Protec-tion Inspectors for inspection and presented two ‘Wanyuandi’ bags, a brown and a black. When the bags were inspected, they were both found to have false bottoms and an inspector discovered cocaine packed into the space. The cocaine was weighed and the amount was listed as 6,563.5 grammes.
