Employee denies stealing wood from demolished building

Fifty-two-year-old Terrence James of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, was on Monday granted bail in the sum of $25,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court after being accused of stealing a quantity of wood from his employer.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

He denied that on April 27, at South Road, he stole several lengths of wood with a total value of $130,000, the property of his employer, Ruchen Khan.

James, in his own defence, stated that the quantity of wood that was allegedly stolen was taken off a building that Khan had bought and was demolishing.

He said the real culprits were the persons who Khan had employed to demolish the building.

However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that James had told the police that he had sold some of the wood to another man for $1,500.

The magistrate then ordered that James return to court on June 25.
