Man on carnal knowledge charges granted $100,000 bail

The man who said he was a Muslim leader and is accused of having carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl was granted $100,000 bail on each charge by Magistrate Dale Kingston yesterday in Court Six.

Clairmonte Meertins of Lot 6063 Cross Street, Alexander Village, East Bank Demerara, was charged with two counts of carnal knowledge on April 16 when he first made his court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.  On that occasion he was remanded.

It is alleged that on February 14 and again on February 19, Meertins had carnal knowledge of the teenage girl.

The girl alleged that Meertins had held her captive for over a month and would gag her month and tie her hands together and put her into a small box in his home whenever anyone came to visit. She had said that it was only because Meertins had forgotten the keys at the home when he went out one day that she managed to make her escape.

The matter is set to continue on July 9 in Court Six.
