Clothes vendor remanded on charge of assaulting wife

A man was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared in Court One at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with unlawfully assaulting his reputed wife.

Anthony Etwaru, 22, a clothes vendor of Tank Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara,  pleaded not guilty when the charge of assaulting Farzona Singh was read to him.

Singh was not present in court but excerpts from her statement given to the police were read. In it, she alleged that Etwaru was in the habit of constantly abusing her.  She alleged too that he threatened to kill her if she ever reported the matter.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question Singh went to the Stabroek Market where she met Etwaru and asked him to keep the couple’s two children since she wanted to go to the hospital.
He added that while there, Etwaru became abusive to Singh and pushed her into a wall.

Etwaru said that this is the first time he has ever abused his wife. He admitted that on the day he “boxed her” since Singh had embarrassed him.
The magistrate then referred the parties to the probation office and ordered that a report be presented to the court on May 21. Etwaru was then remanded.
