A Laing Avenue man who was charged with attempted murder was granted $500,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared before her yesterday.
Earl Scott, 33, was not required to plead when the charge was read to him. It is alleged that on May 3 at Laing Avenue he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Ryan Nickles with intent to murder him.
He was represented by attorney Nigel Hughes in association with Tanya Warren. Hughes in his bail application said that Scott and Nickles had a previous matter where Nickles allegedly shot at Scott’s home. The attorney added that although the matter was reported, no action was taken by the police.
It was further alleged that Nickles constantly taunted the accused and on the day in question, he attacked Scott with a knife. The attorney said that Nickles received a stab wound because of his own action.
Hughes requested bail and asked that Nickles be warned to stay away from Scott.
Police prosecutor Inspec-tor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, Nickles went to his mother-in-law’s home where he met Scott and had an exchange of words. It is alleged that Scott took a knife from his waist and stabbed Nickles in the face and the region of the heart. He was then admitted to the hospital.
Scott reportedly fled the scene and showed up a few days later at the police station with his lawyer. Telford objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence.
However, bail was granted and the matter will come up in Court Two on June 18.
