Woman found with throat slit at Amerindian Hostel

A 63-year-old woman was yesterday found with her throat slit at the Amerindian Hostel and suicide is suspected.

Evelyn Daniels, a resident of Matthew’s Ridge, North West District was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was rushed.

Police said in a press release last night that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, which occurred around 12:30 hrs at the Princes Street location.

 Investigations, the release said, revealed that Daniels travelled to Georgetown last Wednesday to seek medical attention and was residing at the hostel.

At around 12:30 hrs yesterday another resident of the hostel reportedly saw her cutting her throat with a knife and raised an alarm.
Stabroek News was unable to contact the woman’s relatives but according to reports there were no prior signs that she wanted to take her own life.
Meanwhile when this newspaper arrived at the hostel, the reporter was not allowed beyond the gate.
According to the female security guard manning the gate, the media was not allowed to enter.

When asked to speak to the person in charge, she returned and said that this newspaper will have to visit the Minister of Amerindian Affairs for whatever information was required.

She refused to confirm the reports of a suspected suicide.
This newspaper was unable to obtain a comment from the ministry despite efforts.
