The Guyana Relief Council (GRC) recently distributed items to 26 persons from six families who suffered disasters even as it continues to appeal to the public to donate to help it fulfil its mandate.
In a press release the GRC said the persons include Merle Franklin from a family of one and Joan Junior from a family of eight who suffered due to high winds. A palm tree reportedly collapsed onto the roof of the family’s 201 Freeman Street, East La Penitence home. Both families were given building materials, mattresses, clothing and foodstuff on Friday.
Mahendra Narine from a family of seven of Lower Kara-Kara, Speight-land, Linden, Linieka Roopnaraine from a family of three of Swan Turn, Soesdyke Linden Highway, Jasmattie Harrinarayan from a family of two of Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice and Joanna Atkins from a family of five of North Ruimveldt also suffered losses due to fire. The GRC gave the families general relief packages comprising mattresses, foodstuff, clothing, kitchen utensils and hygiene items on Friday. The GRC said since the start of the year it has seen an increase in the assistance needed by families who suffered due to fire. It said from January to May it had rendered assistance to 41 families comprising 198 persons whereas over the same period in 2009 it helped 25 families comprising 100 persons.
The Council said due to this increase its limited resources have drastically decreased and as such it is appealing to the public to donate new or used clothing and other items in good condition to boost its efforts to assist those in need.
