Opportunities for local firms in Haiti rebuilding

The Guyana Manufacturing & Services Association Limited (GMSA)  is inviting all eligible Guyanese companies in certain sectors to submit business profiles  regarding their possible involvement in the Haiti reconstruction programme.

The GMSA in a press release stated  that construction and engineering, including architects and building contractors and building material suppliers, food distribution and related industries and professional services are among the   sectors that have been identified as priority areas requiring comprehensive profiles from eligible companies.

In addition  agricultural production and processing and shipping and logistics sectors were also identified among the priority  areas.

The invitation for the submission of business profiles follows a request  by the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce  (CAIC)  emerging from the substantial business opportunities emanating from the US$7.8B  funds pledged by the International Donor Community for the Reconstruction of Haiti programme.

Former prime minister of Jamaica,  Percival  J. Patterson is coordinating  CARICOM’s participation and possible involvement, while the coordinator for Guyana is GMSA president Clinton Williams, the release  said.

Meanwhile,  a  business forum led by CAIC/CARICOM will be held in Haiti during  the first  week of July to “concretize CARICOM/Private Sector Business involvement in the various projects  associated with the reconstruction programme.

This involvement, the release  added,  is likely to be in  collaboration with  reputable Haitian  counterpart and/or CARICOM companies  where such amalgamation might be more beneficial, considering the likely competition from other multinational  companies.

In light of the time frame for the proposed meeting, the GMSA is now requesting  the submission of business profiles to its  secretariat,  preferably electronically to the e-mail address:  gma_guyana@yahoo.com  or directly to 157 Waterloo  Street, North Cummingsburg  no later than June 15,  2010.   And all such profiles must be submitted under the heading ‘Haiti Reconstruction Programme’, the release added.
