Trio accused of fighting at Kitty mosque

Three men who were involved in a fight at a Kitty mosque were each granted $70,000 bail yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.

Ramesh Rajkumar, 41, of 83 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Rajesh Khalil on June 6 at Sandy Babb Street.  He pleaded not guilty and was represented by attorney Deborah Kumar who asked for bail to be granted.

Meanwhile, Frankie Rahim and Rajesh Khalil were jointly charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Ramesh Rajkumar on June 6 at Sandy Babb Street.  They pleaded not guilty.

Attorney Emily Dodson represented the duo.  Rahim, 42, of 698 Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara is a taxi driver at Kitty Cabs while Khalil, 35, resides at 68 Second Street, Campbellville and is a mechanic.

The attorney asked for reasonable bail to be granted.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said the parties are Muslim brothers who sustained their injuries as a result of a fight they had at the mosque.  He said that he had no objection to bail.

The fight, he said, resulted from an altercation over missing money from the place of worship.  He said that Rajkumar is alleging that Rahim held him while Khalil lashed him with a piece of wood which resulted in his left arm being fractured.

Meanwhile, Khalil is alleging that Rajkumar armed himself with the wood and lashed him in his head and in retaliation he took the wood and hit him.

Telford asked for a date for statements and that the parties stay away from each other until the determination of the matter.

They were then granted bail by the magistrate and the matter transferred to Court 10 for July 29.
