The National Aquaculture Association of Guyana (NAAG) elected a new executive committee and approved a new constitution at its fourth annual AGM hosted on June 8th.
In a press release NAAG said Beni Sankar was elected president; Kris Jugdeo, vice-president; Lloyda Angus, secretary; Dr Leslie Chin, treasurer and Tejnarine Geer, assistant secretary treasurer.
Outgoing President Dr Chin voiced his appreciation for developments in the sector, stating that despite the association slowing down several individual aquaculture businesses have been moving forward and progress can still be measured.
Sankar, in his address said, “This is a fresh beginning, and we’re going to push aquaculture and move the industry forward so more people can see that farming fish has a positive potential for Guyana.” He also said the ministry will work with the Agriculture Diversification Programme to develop both sectors. He noted too that NAAG holds a seat on the Private Sector Commission, “an indication that there is faith in developing an aquaculture sector.”
The release said the meeting also approved a new constitution that narrows its focus to the twin goals of advocacy and awareness of local aquaculture. NAAG boasts membership from “all parts of the aquaculture value chain, from a hatchery to aquaculture farms, and also works closely with the Government.”
