Private sector urges members to comply with international standards

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) is calling on its members and businesses to seek compliance with the international standards for their business process, products and services.

“This is in recognition of the important role standards play in the provision of quality products and services,” the PSC said in a press release. It also acknowledged the efforts of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) to encourage local businesses to conform to international standards. The GNBS launched its National Accreditation Focal Point to mark World Accreditation Day celebrated last Wednesday.

The PSC congratulates those companies that have reached high standards of certification. It said international standards refer to the body of globally accepted standards issued by internationally recognised and accredited standards organisations which products traded internationally are required to meet to be sold on the global market. International standards provide significant benefits and opportunities for businesses, the PSC said. In addition to providing a guarantee on the quality and safety of products to customers, standards help businesses to acquire brand recognition, develop the capacity to reinvest extensively in research and development as they grow and boost their capacities to secure finance through the issuance of equity and debt instruments.

International standards also benefit Guyana in the broader context since increased exportation of a diverse base of quality products and services makes companies more profitable. It also helps to bolster and make them resilient to international shocks such as increasing oil prices and the general volatility of international prices received for traditional export products such as sugar, rice and timber.
