Driver fined after forcing police commander’s vehicle off road

Deochand Bikhari, 42, of Cumberland East Canje was yesterday fined $25,000 for dangerous driving, after he pleaded guilty before Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Prosecutor Satrohan Dayaram said that on Thursday, at about 10am, a police vehicle PKK 885, driven by Corporal Grant with Commander Steven Merai as a passenger, was driving on the Palmyra Public Road heading towards New Amsterdam. Motor Lorry GLL701, driven by Bikhari, was parked on the opposite side of the road, facing the same direction.

As the police vehicle was about to pass, Bikhari drove into the path of the police car, forcing Grant to take evasive action and ending up on the parapet off the road. Bikhari was subsequently arrested, cautioned and charged.
