A 33-year-old pork-knocker died after he was reportedly lashed in the head by another man on Saturday night following an argument at a Mahdia disco.
Orlando Hanover of Lot 50 Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was found lying unconscious in front of a disco at Mahdia at about 11 pm on Saturday with a piece of wood next to him, police said in a statement. He was taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he died while receiving medical treatment. The assailant has not been held by police but he is known and is being sought, this newspaper was told.
Hanover’s mother, Ann Doris, told Stabroek News that just after midnight yesterday she was informed that her eldest son had been killed. She said she was initially told he was chopped but was later told that he was ambushed and lashed with a piece of wood. The woman, who is a police officer based at Mahaica, said she was told that Hanover was at a shop gambling. She said he won some money and this caused an argument between him and another gambler.
It did not seem to be a big argument but while Hanover was leaving the shop, the other gambler followed and lashed him at the back of the head with a piece of wood. He fell and the man lashed him again, Doris said. She said her son was picked up and rushed to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The grieving woman said that Hanover left for Mahdia two months ago and she had last spoken to him about three days ago and he said everything was fine. She said up to Saturday she received some money he had sent to her. Doris said her son was polite and did not interfere with anyone. He was always there for everyone, she said.
Hanover worked as a pork-knocker for several years. He was not married and did not have any children. Police investigations are continuing.
