Justice Ian Chang granted an alleged drug trafficker a total of $750,000 bail after he had been remanded to prison following his denial of two counts of possession and one charge of cultivating marijuana.
Wazim Mohammed, 23, had been remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo after he denied the charges at the Reliance Magistrates’ Court.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court that on June 1, following a police raid at Berbice River, Mohammed was found at a marijuana cultivation plot at Gate Roy. He allegedly had 30kg of cannabis in his possession.
Dayaram told the court that police destroyed four fields comprising eight acres of cannabis sativa. In addition to 18,000 plants between the heights of 2ft and 6 ft, weighing 22kg (48.5016 lbs), five nurseries were also destroyed with about 25,000 seedlings.
The police also found 350kg (771.617 lbs) of cannabis sativa.
Further, Dayaram said during the exercise Mohammed was seen in the fields operating the grass cutter. When police confronted him, he allegedly told them that he was not the owner of the plot but an employee.
In a sworn affidavit, petitioner, Nashmoon Ramsarran, an aunt of the accused who resides at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, said her nephew worked on a farm as an employee of a “Strong Man” who has since eluded the police.
