Ex-cop charged with simple larceny at Police Training College

A former policeman was placed on $30,000 bail when he appeared in Court One of the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with simple larceny.

Naresh Zalileel

Naresh Zalileel, 19, of 10 Maria’s Pleasure, Wakenaam pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.  It is alleged that on March 16 at the Police Training College at Eve Leary he stole $30,000, property of Surwan Persaud.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that on the day in question Persaud left his bank card in his locker at the Police Training College.

At some point, Zalileel broke into the locker and stole the card and then withdrew the money.

Telford said that on a previous occasion, the defendant had accompanied Persaud to the bank when he withdrew money in his presence and may have remembered the pin number.

Zalileel was then placed on bail and the matter put down for September 9.
