Bed-ridden boy, 7, burns to death in Issano fire

A bed-ridden seven-year-old boy was burnt to death on Tuesday night when fire erupted in his home at Ant Eater Island, Issano in the Cuyuni/Mazaruni area.

The burnt remains of Marley George were taken to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour in the city on Thursday night. The police and a representative of the Guyana Fire Service have visited the scene and conducted investigations. The incident occurred around 8:30pm.

Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine told Stabroek News yesterday that George, who was disabled and confined to bed, was left alone by his grandmother who took care of him. From all accounts, the two lived alone.

According to Ramnarine, there are reports that a lantern was left lit in the structure but he could not say if this is what caused the fire.

This newspaper was told that shortly after the grandmother left the area, residents saw flames coming from the building. The blaze was eventually put out but the little boy could not be saved.

Ramnarine said that the grandmother was not taken into the police custody. Several efforts to contact fire officials were unsuccessful. This newspaper was also unable to make contact with the child’s relatives. The area where the incident occurred is not easily accessible.
