Gov’t offers free house lots to Mahdia fire victims

Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon announced that Mahdia residents affected by the July 1 fire, which gutted a large section of the community, will be given free house lots.

Luncheon on Thursday said Cabinet has allocated $5M to prepare the land to provide as many as 150 house lots in the Region 8 community. He noted that government has also set aside $20M for rebuilding and establishing a new arcade at the burnt-out site, the Government Information Agency (GINA) has reported.

According to Luncheon Cabinet’s response is based on an urgent damage assessment and needs analysis that has been completed. A 36-acre housing area near the airstrip has already been identified to start the building, GINA said.

Over the next few weeks, the Central Housing and Planning Authority, the Ministry of Human Services and the regional administration will continue to manage government’s response to the community as well as support the NGOs efforts.
