Autopsy rules out foul play in fatal Canal No 2 fire

Bibi Latif, whose charred remains were pulled from the ruins of her Debuff, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara home after a fire, died from smoke inhalation and there is no evidence of foul play, a senior police officer yesterday revealed.

The officer said that there was nothing to suggest that Latif, 62, was murdered.

There have been questions about the mysterious origin of the fire, which was first observed at around 1:50 am. Stabroek News was unable to contact fire service officials for information on the possible cause of the fire

Latif’s neighbour, Vishnu Mohabir had recalled that he was awakened by the smoke. He saw smoke emanating from the bottom flat-of the two storey building and later there was an explosion and flames. He recalled that he ran outside raising an alarm. It was impossible to get close to the home because of the intense heat, he said

Latif had lived alone.
