Seafield man’s cows chopped

A cattle farmer of Seafield, West Coast Berbice is seeking justice after persons chopped four of his cows around 10 am on Saturday.

Dexter Carmichael, 44, told Stabroek News yesterday that two of the cows, one of which is pregnant suffered gaping wounds to their backs while one suffered a “skin cut.” The tail of the other cow, he said was almost severed.

He said the cows started running in all directions while the persons were pelting chops at them. After spending some time gathering the animals again he realized how many were chopped.

He then informed the vet who arrived and treated the animals and later made a report to the Fort Wellington Police Station.

Carmichael recounted that he was sitting on the pavilion at the cricket ground in the village looking on at his cows which were grazing on the sea-dam when he noticed a man running after them.

He said he immediately headed to the area and had to swim across a canal to get to the spot. On his way, his view was blocked by a “ridge on the sea defence.”

By the time he got there he observed that there were two men and two young boys. He also saw one of the men chopping a cow and he started to shout at them that, “Ah tell them ah see y’all; ah see wah y’all do hey…”

The men did not bother to look in his direction but one sped off in a boat with the two boys while the other ran away.

Carmichael, who believed that the chopping stemmed from old grievances with one of the men, told this newspaper that this was not the first time his cows were chopped and that he was becoming frustrated.

He said one of the men had threatened to “kill out all me cows.” He said he was not the only cattle owner in the village and although cows belonging to other people were there at the time, only his cows were chopped.
