Man denies having cannabis and cocaine in haversack

A man who was allegedly found with a quantity of cannabis and cocaine in a haversack was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Dellon Rickby pleaded not guilty to two summary charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton read them to him.

He denied that on July 25 at Essequibo he had 28 grammes of cocaine and 423 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to Rickby’s bail application when he suggested it and asked that he be remanded to prison and his cases be transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

The magistrate granted the prosecutor her requests and ordered that Rickby make another court appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on August 11.

Daniels stated that the facts of the case are that on the day in question police ranks were on patrol duty in the Essequibo River area when they observed Rickby standing on the road with a haversack between his legs.

The ranks then decided to conduct a routine search on Rickby’s person and then the haversack where they discovered three brown scotch taped parcels in it.

Upon closer inspection the ranks discovered that two of the parcels contained cannabis and the other cocaine.

The prosecution said Rickby had admitted that parcels belonged to him.
