Taxi driver remanded over death of Crane woman

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered that a 28-year-old taxi driver who was involved in the accident on Sunday that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old Crane, West Coast Demerara woman be remanded to prison when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Court.

Ramkisoon Permaul

Ramkisoon Permaul of Lot 52 Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

The charge alleges that on July 25 at La Union Public Road, West Coast Demerara, he drove a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public which resulted in an accident that caused the death of Bernice Herbert.

Permaul’s lawyer applied for reasonable bail for him on the grounds that he had no previous matters in the courts, that he has been a driver for over nine years and he poses no risk of flight.

The lawyer also stated that although his client suffers from epilepsy he is currently on treatment.

However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that Permaul was speeding on the day of the accident.

He said that he collided with several pedestrians standing on the road and ended up slamming into a lamp post.

He noted that due to the force of impact that Singh sustained she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Telford also noted that two other persons, who were also victims of the accident, are currently hospitalised while others who did not sustain serious injuries were treated at the hospital and sent home.

The magistrate then refused bail for Permaul and ordered that he make another court appearance on August 6.

According to reports, several persons were standing on the western side of the roadway at Crane waiting for transportation around 9 am Sunday morning when they were hit by the car which was proceeding in the direction of Parika.
