Secondary school student granted bail on ganja charge

A 15-year-old student of a Region Seven secondary school was yesterday granted bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly being found with a quantity of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The teen pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton read it to him.

He denied that on August 1, at the Bartica Arcade, he had 12 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. His lawyer Peter Hugh asked that he be admitted to reasonable bail.

The prosecution made no objection to the request and the magistrate subsequently granted bail in the sum of $60,000.

The matter was then transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for August 11 when the teen is expected to make a court appearance there.
