Partying woman charged with assaulting cop

A 22-year-old woman was granted self bail yesterday when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court after being accused of resisting being arrested by a policewoman who she allegedly assaulted.

Keisha Chase had pleaded not guilty to the charges of unlawful assault, obstructing a police officer in her line of duty and behaving disorderly when Magistrate Priya Beharry read them to her.

Chase denied that on December 20, 2009, at Albert Street, Alberttown, she assaulted Constable Benjamin, she obstructed the policewoman from conducting her duties and she behaved disorderly.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that on the day of the incident Constable Benjamin was on duty at the Guyana Motor Racing Sports Club which was holding a party when Chase’s brother started to behave disorderly.

He said that Benjamin cautioned him about his behaviour but that he continued.

He said that the police arrested the brother but that Chase became annoyed and started to use indecent language against her.

She was also cautioned about her behaviour but she continued so Benjamin attempted to arrest her but was pushed to the ground by Chase.

The prosecutor stated that several other police officers, who were in the area at the time, came to Benjamin’s assistance and arrested Chase.

However, Chase’s lawyer refuted the prosecutor’s allegations.

He said that the incident spun out of Benjamin walking on Chase’s foot.

He said that the women had an exchange of words during which time the crowd that had gathered started to chastise Benjamin about her behaviour.

He said that the officer became embarrassed and had attempted to arrest his client.

He noted that Chase had no previous brushes with the law and that though her brother was charged with the part he played in the incident, the charges were dismissed.

He noted that Chase had been out of the country since the incident.

The magistrate then ordered that the cases be transferred to Court Three for September 7.
