Several persons held in ex-cop murder probe

Several persons, including a woman with wounds about the body, who were last seen in the company of 32-year-old ex-cop Sheldon Matheson, have been arrested in connection with his murder.

This is according to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud. During a telephone interview yesterday the Crime Chief told Stabroek News that the woman may have been injured by the persons who attacked Matheson.

No one has been charged as yet, but police have several leads which they think will tie the loose ends to eventually enable them to lay charge (s).

Relatives of the deceased believe that “persons in the area know wha happen” and may be trying to protect the identity of the perpetrators, and if this is so then “that is bad”.

Stabroek News understands that Matheson was intoxicated, and reportedly went after a woman with whom he had been dancing and subsequently followed her home. The woman’s husband, this newspaper was told, may have seen them dancing, went home, sharpened his cutlass, and waited for them.

Matheson, Stabroek News further understands, was killed by that man and another was paid $5000 to get rid of the body; dumping it next to the roadside stall where it was discovered. Another woman has been arrested because it is alleged that she saw when Matheson’s body was being taken to be dumped in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Mookesh Beharry, of  Bushlot, Corentyne, said he woke up Sunday morning sometime around 6 and when he looked out his window he saw something in a crouching position, which at first he thought, was a dog, but after looking carefully he recognized that it was a person. An alarm was sounded and many persons from the neighbourhood started to come out at the roadside.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene, at about 6.20am a large crowd had gathered and was trying to get a closer look at the body. This newspaper observed a gaping wound on the lower back and one on the right hand, close to the wrist. Matheson’s jersey was drenched with blood. His National Identification card and his driver’s licence were found about 100 metres away from him and his black slippers 10 metres away.

Police arrived a few minutes later and as they turned Matheson a wound could be seen to his neck.
