Jailed for 18 months for hitting man with cutlass

A man who admitted that he struck another man on his head was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 months jail when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Dwayne Henry pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful wounding when it was read to him by the magistrate.

According to the facts of the case, Henry unlawfully and malicious wounded Cleon Hinds. The prosecutor told the court that last Monday, at about 11.40 am, Hinds approached the defendant and demanded from him the money he (Henry) owed him.

The defendant became annoyed and reached into a bag he was carrying, retrieved a cutlass and struck Hinds on the head. The prosecutor said Hinds sustained injuries to his head and left arm.

Before the sentenced was handed down, Henry asked the court to show leniency.
