Wife held in Diamond ‘suicide’ probe released

The common-law wife of the “depressed” labourer who reportedly stabbed himself in the chest last Friday has been released from police custody but the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated.

A post-mortem examination conducted on Alvin Kissoon’s remains on Monday revealed that he died from perforation of the heart due to stab wounds. Kissoon, 38, of Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre sometime around 2 am.

Police had said from the woman’s reports, the man committed suicide. Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, however, said the incident was being treated as a suspected murder since the injuries the man sustained were not consistent with someone stabbing himself. As a result, the woman was arrested.

The police said that initial investigations revealed that Kissoon is reported to have gone home under the influence of alcohol and threatened to kill himself as he had lost his job. “He was later seen by his reputed wife inflicting injuries to his left foot with a knife. She reportedly attempted to take away the knife from him during which he pushed her away and stabbed himself to his chest, police added.
