The man who was stabbed to death at 14 Miles, Issano on Tuesday has been identified as Vincent Williams called `Teddy Bear’, 58, of Supenaam, Essequibo Coast and his attacker who is in police custody will soon be charged.
Police said in a press release yesterday that the murder occurred at 0400 hours and investigations so far have revealed that Williams and the suspect were consuming alcohol when they became involved in an argument over a female.
Williams was later chopped and stabbed about the body by the suspect and succumbed to his injuries.
Stabroek News was told that following the incident public-spirited citizens tied up the suspect and handed him over to the team from the Bartica Police Station who had travelled to the remote area to investigate the matter.
The suspect and the body were transported to Bartica and subsequently Georgetown. Williams’ remains are at the Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination which has been scheduled for tomorrow.
Police said in their press release that the weapon used in the incident was recovered at the scene by the ranks.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s stepdaughter, Margaret Roberts said that Williams was living at Lot 11 Market Street for 25 years but left for the interior after her mother passed away two years ago.
She recalled that she last saw him in February and he had promised to return home on August Monday to spent time with his family but he never came. He had apparently changed his mind at the last minute.
The grieving woman said she learnt of the news on the day of the incident and was told by Williams’ employer that he was a cook at her mining camp.
Roberts said that according to the reports from the employer, Williams was at “some lady” house when he and the suspect had an argument about the said woman. The woman told Stabroek News that Williams was chopped twice in the head after which the suspect pulled out a knife from his waist and plunged it into the abdomen of the already wounded man.
Roberts said that based on the reports she received, Williams collapsed in front of the woman’s door with the knife still stuck between his ribs. The stab was apparently the fatal blow as he died almost immediately, she added.
According to Roberts the news left her in shock as Williams was not known to be a violent person. She described him a peacemaker who was always jovial and willing to give assistance to persons in need.
Williams is originally from Mabaruma, Region One.
On Sunday, Sylvester Simon a miner of St. Ignatius, Lethem was stabbed to death at Apaikwa Landing, Middle Mazaruni during an argument. The suspect has since been charged.
For this year, so far there have been 14 murders in the interior.
