Rose Hall man remanded over Laparkan armed robbery

A 28-year-old man who allegedly stole  a gun and over one million dollars in cash belonging to the Laparkan Group of Companies in Berbice was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Ramnarine Ganga called ‘Kishan’ of 105 Graham Street, Rose Hall was not required to enter a plea to two counts of the indictable offence of robbery under arms when they were read to him by the acting chief magistrate.

The allegation is that on August 9 at Berbice, being armed with a gun, Ganga robbed Vernon Azees of one .32 Tarus revolver and six rounds of .32 ammunition valued $28,720, property of the Laparkan Group of Companies.

On the same day at Berbice also, being armed with a gun, Ganga allegedly robbed Ratna Mangray of $1,036,000, property of the Laparkan Group of Companies.

When given a chance to speak, the accused who gave his occupation as a typist told the court that upon his arrest he was badly beaten by the police. He also related to the court that he was forced by the lawmen to affix his signature to a statement which he signed against his will.

“Meh worship de police proper beat meh. Deh abuse meh, bus up meh mouth kick meh in meh belly and all over my body. Deh even force meh fuh sign some statement,” Ganga said.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford made an application that the defendant be remanded to prison and his matter transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

The prosecutor’s request was granted and the unrepresented Ganga was later remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court for September 7.
