Miner accused of Issano stabbing death remanded

The miner who allegedly murdered another at 14 Miles, Issano on Tuesday was charged with the capital offence and remanded to prison yesterday.

Leon Husain called “Lavadutch” was not required to plead to the charge, which alleges that on August 31 at 14 Miles, Issano he murdered Vincent Williams. He appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Husain, 23 of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara was represented by attorney Hukumchand, who made an application to the court for his client to receive medical attention for a fractured arm.  The attorney showed the court an X-ray of Husain’s arm obtained from the Bartica Hospital. He also produced a referral from that hospital to the Georgetown Hospital for further treatment. Given the attorney’s request, Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford said a note would be made on the file for Husain to be taken to the hospital.

Husain was then remanded and the matter transferred to Bartica Magistrates’ Court for September 28.

Vincent Williams

It is alleged that Williams, called ‘Teddy Bear,’ 58, of Supenaam, Essequibo Coast was stabbed to death around 4:00am by the assailant. Police had said in a press release that investigations revealed that Williams and the suspect were consuming alcohol when they became involved in an argument over a female.

Williams was later chopped and stabbed about the body by the suspect and succumbed to his injuries.
