Teaching Service Commission sworn in

Seven members of the Teaching Service Commission were yesterday sworn in by President Bharrat Jagdeo paving the way for the constitutional body responsible for the appointment of teachers to function.

At a simple ceremony held at the Office of the President, Mohamed Khan, Chandrawattie Leila Ramson, Alan Munroe, Anoopwattie Veeren, Roopnarine Tiwari, Maydha Persaud and Conrad Kendall were sworn in by the President.  The swearing-in ceremony took place in the presence of relatives of the commissioners and cabinet members.

The commission has the power to appoint persons as teachers in the public service and to remove and to exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in such offices.

Last week President Bharrat Jagdeo, while meeting with some residents of Buxton, announced that he would be moving to appoint the commission after holding discussions with Opposition Leader Robert Corbin.

“We had to consult with the Leader of the Opposition. He couldn’t come to the meeting but he was leaving the country and he called me and said he is okay because we are putting back the same group,” Jagdeo said. The President said that Corbin had recommended Alan Munroe to be his nominee on the commission.
