‘Six Head’ Lewis on assault charge

Former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Andrew “Six Head” Lewis was yesterday released on $10,000 bail, after he pleaded not guilty to the unlawful assault of another man.

Lewis, of Lot 13 and 14 Hutsonville, East Bank Demerara, was charged with unlawfully assaulting Lawrence Wilkinson, when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that Lewis committed the assault on September 9, at Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.

Neither the accused nor the virtual complainant was asked by the magistrate for an explanation about what transpired on the day in question.

Initially, Lewis was admitted to bail in the sum of $25,000. However, it was reduced after he explained to the court that he could not afford to post the sum and he pleaded with the magistrate for a reduction. “Ah could afford ten thousand meh worship, duh is all ah gat,” Lewis said.

The prosecution had no objection to Lewis being granted his pre-trial liberty and he was subsequently placed on $10,000 bail. He was later ordered to return on October 4, when the case will be called in Court Three.

In 2001, Lewis won Guyana’s first world title at the professional level.
