Vryheid’s Lust woman accused of ganja trafficking in Bartica

A 27-year-old woman slapped with four charges of cannabis possession for the purpose of trafficking was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on October 7 at the Bartica Police Station Petal Meyers of 28 South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, had in her possession a total of 762 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The cosmetologist pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when it was read to her by the acting chief magistrate.
According to Prosecutor Lionel Harvey, the illegal substances were found to be in the woman’s possession in four separate sealed packages on the same day.

In giving the facts of the case, Harvey told the court that on the day in question the police  were on patrol when they stopped motor vehicle HB 6366 in which the defendant was travelling. A search of the vehicle was subsequently conducted and according to the prosecutor the illegal substance was uncovered.

Harvey said that the various parcels belonging to the accused were found to contain seeds, leaves and stems believed to be parts of the cannabis plant.
Attorney-at-law Ronald Burch-Smith who represented the accused made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that she has no previous convictions, has a fixed address, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations. The prosecution, however, objected to the bail  application, contending that the offence warrants only special reasons before bail can be considered.

The lawyer was unable to secure bail for his client. She was later remanded to prison. Her matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for October, 27.
