Taxi driver, labourer on break and enter charge

Two men accused of a $2.1M theft were yesterday placed on bail in the sum of $250,000 each when they appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that between August 27 and 30 at Supply, East Bank Demerara, Derrick Watson, a taxi driver of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme and Jason Manbodh, a labourer and father of two of 343 Middle Street, South Cummingsburg, broke and entered the dwelling house of James Samuels and stole therein one music set, one television and a quantity of cash, all to the value of $2.1M.

The jointly charged duo pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to them by the acting chief magistrate.

Watson told the court that he has no knowledge of the charge leveled against him and then requested from the magistrate the presence of an attorney. The sitting magistrate advised Watson that it was his right to retain a lawyer and if he could not afford one he should seek the assistance of Legal Aid.

The two men were then admitted to $250,000 bail each and ordered to return to court on November 3.
