Ice-pick robbery accused on $200,000 bail

A contractor who is accused of using an ice-pick to rob another man of articles to the value of $241,000 was yesterday placed on  $200,000 bail

when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate
Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on October 14 at Georgetown, being armed with an ice pick, Patrick Watson of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, robbed Steven Rambosan of one laptop computer, a bag, a passport and other items valued $241,000, property of the said Steven Rambosan.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery under arms when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.

The unrepresented Watson in his defence told the court that he was innocent of the charge as he was at work on the day in question.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant was walking along the road when he was accosted by the accused who placed an ice-pick to his side and relieved him of the articles stated in the charge.

The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being granted his pretrial liberty but made a submission that it be in a substantial amount to ensure that he returns to stand trial.

Watson was later placed on $200,000 bail. His matter was transferred to Court Five for November 1.
